Publikacja jest rezultatem badań autora nad zespołami zawierającymi dokumentację Ambasady RP w Moskwie-Kujbyszewie (1941-43) oraz Ministerstwa Informacji i Dokumentacji (1939-45) przechowywanymi w Instytucie Hoovera w USA, dokąd trafiły po II wojnie światowej jako spuścizna po Rządzie Polskim na Uchodźstwie. Zostały zdeponowane przez ambasadora J. Ciechanowskiego oraz ministra A. Zawiszę. Autor omawia zawartość akt Ambasady RP na terenie ZSRR po 30 VII 1941 r. (układ polsko-radziecki Sikorski-Majski) i nawiązaniu stosunków dyplomatycznych przez oba kraje. Jej działalność skupiała się na ludności polskiej pozostałej po 17 IX 1939 r. na terenach zajętych przez ZSRR, w szczególności na zapewnianiu pomocy żywnościowej i materialnej oraz organizacji polskiej armii. Podobnie autor przedstawia archiwalia Ministerstwa Informacji i Dokumentacji. Praca przydatna, zarówno dla badaczy okresu II wojny światowej, jak i dla wszystkich zainteresowanych epoką, tym bardziej, że zmikrofilmowane dokumenty wymienionych instytucji są dostępne w Archiwum Akt Nowych. Publikacja zawiera obszerną bibliografię, indeksy osobowy i geograficzny.

This publication is an outcome of the author's studies on fonds of Polish records preserved at the Hoover Institution in the USA, where they fund their way after the end of the Second World War as the legacy of the Polish Government in Exile. They were deposited there by J. Ciechanowski, the 28Ambassador, and minister A. Zawisza. The author presents a detailed description of records of the Polish Embassy set up in Moscow-Kuybishev after the signature of the Polish-Soviet Treaty (Sikorski-Majski) on 30 July 1941 and the establishment of diplomatic relations between those two countries. Its activity was focused on the Polish population which after 17 September 1939 remained on the territories occupied by the Soviet Union, in particular, on providing food supplies and material support as well as on the organisation of the Polish Army. Similarly, the author presents archive materials of the Ministry of Information and Documentation, generated in the course of collecting data and co-operation with media. The work is extremely useful, both for research workers studying the period of the Second World War and for all those interested in that period, the more so, as the microfilmed documents of the above mentioned institutions are available at the Archives of Contemporary Records. The publication includes an extensive bibliography, indexes of names and geographical names.

W latach 1944-1989 Polska Partia Robotnicza i Polska Partia Socjalistyczna, a potem Polska Zjednoczona Partia Socjalistyczna odegrały decydującą rolę w przemianach społecznych, decydowały o losach państwa i narodu. Dokumentacja archiwalna wytworzona przez te partie jest jednym z najważniejszych źródeł dla badań naukowych umożliwiających dokonanie oceny procesów społecznych zachodzących przez dziesiątki lat w Polsce Ludowej. Celem pracy jest zaprezentowanie procesu kształtowania się biurowości i systemu kancelaryjnego oraz archiwów partyjnych. W książce opisano m.in. ewolucję „archiwum zakładowego” partii – od zbierania dokumentów i pamiątek związanych z szeroko rozumianą historią ruchu robotniczego, poprzez kształtowanie się normatywów kancelaryjno-archiwalnych (instrukcje, wykazy akt), metodyki archiwalnej, powstawania inwentarzy i spisu zespołów, po działalność wydawniczą i edycję źródeł. In the years 1944-1989, the Polish Workers’ Party and the Polish Socialist Party, and subsequently, the Polish United Workers’ Party played a crucial role in the process of social transformations, deciding about the history of the State and the nation. Archival documentation created by those parties is one of the most important sources for scientific research permitting the evaluation of social processes taking place in the Polish People’s Republic for decades. The purpose of this publication is to present the process of office management, chancery system and party archives development. The publication describes, among others, the evolution of “current records” of parties – from collecting documents and tokens of remembrance connected with a widely understood history of the workers’ movement, through the development of chancery and archive standards (instructions, lists of records), archival methodology, preparation of inventories and lists of fonds, to the editorial activity and source edition. The publication also includes a description of the activity of the Archives of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party (KC PZPR), Archives of the Party History Department (1948-1957), Archives of the Party History Institute (1957-1971), and the Central Archives of KC PZPR (as of 1971).

The present edition of the Archival Directory, containing information on the state archives and selected archives not subordinated to the Director General of State Archives. The institutions contained in the directory have new telephone numbers, many of them have now access to the Internet and some changed their locations and addresses. As the process of modernising of state administration and cultural institutions, continues the present edition of the Archival Directory contains information accurate as of June 30th, 2004.
Apart from archives and Polish institutions the directory also contains in the attachment the following information:
- a list of archives of Polish communities abroad and of other intitutions which hold archival materials;
- names and addresses of head offices of archives in foreign countries, regional archives in neighbouring countries and address of some important archives in those countries;
- addresses of international institutions.
