George MacKenzie has been Keeper of the Records of Scotland (Chief Executive of the National Archives of Scotland), since January 2001. He is a member of the Programme Commission of the International Council on Archives (ICA), with responsibility for co-ordinating worldwide projects on electronic records and archive automation. ICA is a non governmental organisation in associate status with UNESCO, bringing together national archives, professional archive associations, organisations and individuals in over 170 countries. He worked full time for ICA as Deputy Secretary General in their Paris office for 2 years, 1995-1996, where he was responsible for the professional programme and for strategic planning. He also carried out missions to Bosnia and Herzegovina for UNESCO, advising on the protection of archives during and after armed conflict. He has also carried out extensive consultancy work for ICA, UNESCO, and the World Bank, specialising in archive preservation and electronic networking.
